( Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Corporate Social Responsibility )
Jawaharlal Institute of Corporate Social Responsibility (JNICSR) established in 2015 under Educational Trust Act 1882, believes that knowledge empowers people to do great things in this world. We also believe that you needn’t put your life on halt to gain that knowledge.
India is the first country in the World to legislate Corporate Social Responsibility through Companies Act 2013. The Companies Act 2013 has introduced several new provisions which have changed the face of Indian Corporate Business. One of such new provisions is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). As per India Company law 2013, It is mandatory for companies to adopt a business – like approach and to create a strategic CSR framework, that leads to socio-economic development and curb environmental issues by promoting sustainable and scientific solutions, but where does these sustainable solutions come from? It comes from education in CSR, which lay seeds for better tomorrow and help fighting economic, social and environmental difficulties. The concept has evolved as a result of socio-economic deficits and provides a framework to survival and sustainability. Skilled CSR graduate plants the seed of better tomorrow, by thinking intensively innovative, welcoming and promoting social changes and evolve as productive leaders.
We at Jawaharlal Institute of Corporate Social Responsibility (JNICSR) are adding our bit to the government’s vision of increased higher education enrolments and promotion of CSR through our online distance learning skill enhancement diploma. CSR education is the mother of new society and every corporate employee should have at least mid-level knowledge of CSR so that corporation can perform a better CSR instead of Just a CSR. BHARAT HEAVY ELECTRICALS LIMITED (BHEL)
One of the greatest challenges before the Government of India on attaining freedom in 1947 was to provide a strong base in infrastructure and capital goods for economic and industrial development. The Government under the leadership of Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru realized that there should be a large manufacturing base and adequate technically qualified personnel for sustained economic growth.
The country’s planners recognized that adequate supply of electric power was a precondition for long term industrial growth. This could be sustained only with a strong domestic power equipment industry. Accordingly, the Planning Commission recommended initiating steps towards setting up a factory for the manufacture of all types of heavy electrical equipment required for various projects. As a result, the Government of India signed an agreement on 17th November, 1955, with Associated Electrical Industries (AEI), UK, for the establishment of a factory at Bhopal complete in all respects for the manufacture of heavy electrical equipment in India. The company was registered as Heavy Electricals (India) Limited (HE(I)L) in the Public Sector under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce on 29th August 1956.
Today India is on the cusp of higher economic growth. The new era will present new growth opportunities. However, the landscape of technology and competition is under transformation. BHEL too is transforming and has embarked upon a journey with a vision of “Creating BHEL of Tomorrow” – an organization that will be Responsive, Robust and Rising, to the needs of the customers, shareholders, employees and society.
Leveraging BHEL’s enviable strengths, glorious past and contribution towards nation building, the company has put together a series of initiatives focusing on sustaining growth and profit, asserting leadership in core business sectors, developing people, enhancing digital capabilities and building potentials in new and diversified businesses as well as technologies for sustained growth.
BHEL’s Mission Statement on CSR is “Be a Committed Corporate Citizen, alive towards its Corporate Social Responsibility”.
BHEL’s contributions towards Corporate Social Responsibility till date include adoption of villages, organising free medical camps / supporting charitable dispensaries, schools for the underprivileged and handicapped children, providing aid during disasters/natural calamities, providing employment to handicapped and Ex-serviceman, rainwater harvesting, plantation of millions of trees, energy saving and conservation of natural resources through environmental management. We have identified eight key thrust areas under which the CSR activities are carried out at BHEL.
Globally, the business scenario has been undergoing an unprecedented change leading to evolution of innovative strategies. Organisations are increasingly realising that their operations have a large impact on not only stakeholders like employees, shareholders, suppliers, customers but also on members of public sphere, communities and environment. It is considered to be the moral responsibility for an organisation to take care of the surroundings and people whose lives are being impacted by its operations.
Every business enterprise must take responsibility and be accountable for the social and environmental effects it has in its surroundings. Through this the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) emerged, paving a way for businesses to return back to the society from the profits it earns. Such initiatives on the part of a company to improve livelihood of people and preserving environment at surroundings of its operations also go a long way in gathering acceptance from local communities.
Engagement of local communities is essential for long-term sustainability for any organisation. This also ensures enhancement of triple bottom line of People-Planet-Profit, depicting the inclusive growth for an organisation. CSR is the way to move forward for all organisations and become good corporate citizens by preserving the environment and bettering lives of all stakeholders.
